As the new OASSC Life Membership category is beginning to take off, we have recently had former player Bran Pemberton ‘sign up’!
Despite emigrating to Canada in 1974, Bryan retains a keen interest in all matters relating to The Reds and makes sure to catch a few games whenever he returns to the UK.
Bryan started watching Stanley at Peel Park in 1953/54 as a 9-year old lad and admits to sneaking into the ground on the odd occasion! By 1958/59 Bryan was representing Stanley in the FA Youth Cup, before progressing to the Reserves via the A Team – no not the one with ‘Howling Mad’ Murdoch and Mr.T before you ask!
After scoring in the final game before Stanley dropped out of the League; Bryan signed for Great Harwood Town in 1964, playing five seasons for ‘arrod but the lure of playing for the reformed Stanley was too great for him and he made the short trip back home. After only a handful of games in the Lancashire Combination during the inaugural 1970 season for the reformed Club, he sustained a bad injury that resulted in being out of the game for 2-years.
In 1975; having now ‘crossed the pond’, Bryan started playing again and is still turning out in an over 60’s side at the age of 75 – though he admits that he has lost a touch of pace!
When receiving his Life Membership; Bryan told us “as a life member it’s one more step in a relationship with the best little club in the world” and that he “couldn’t be more proud of the way things are today with a great owner, a great management team and a squad that believes in Accrington Stanley” and who could argue with those sentiments?
Bryan also worked for a time at the North West Gas Board, where he mentored a young apprentice – our very own Ken Jefferson!
If like Bryan, you too would like to become an OASSC Life Member, then it costs £100 or £60 for anyone aged 60 or over.
