The fixture itself was one that made you check twice, to make sure you had read it right!
So taking your seat in the AJ Bell Stadium for a ‘home’ game in Salford to see Stanley lining up against Marseille, with the motorway looming large in the background (itself beneath a rainbow) was somewhat of a surreal moment.
A decent sized travelling ‘home’ support with the odd scattering of OM fans saw Stanley go into the half-time break 2:0 up. It may be a friendly but who cares? 2:0 up – I’ll be having some of that, ta very much! Unreal.
The Ligue 1 opponents changed 10 players at half-time but despite conceding a goal and nervously watching a stoppage time free-kick sail over the goal, The Reds (sorry Les Rouge) held on for a memorable 2:1 win.
A thoroughly enjoyable evening. Surely we need a return fixture next preseason in the Stade Vélodrome? What do reckon Andy Holt?
